Infertility is inability to achieve pregnancy in a sexually active couple, who is not using any contraception. Primary infertility is when a woman is unable to bear a child after trying for at least a year. Secondary infertility is when a woman who has had a previous child is not getting pregnant in 6 months – 1 year of trying. Infertility affects around 10 to 15 % of population
Normally if a couple, in whom the wife is < 35 years, doesn’t achieve pregnancy in 1 to 2 years after trying for pregnancy, the couple should visit a gynecologist, get investigated and start treatment. On the other hand, if the woman’s age is > 35 years, she should start getting investigated within 6 months to one year of trying for a child. A simple semen test after 3 days of abstinence will lets us know either there is any major problem in the husband. An clinical examination, BMI calculation, pelvic sonography to rule out any pathology and for calculating AFC count and blood tests for AMH, prolactin and TSH will give us adequate information about whether the woman is contributing to infertility.
